Founded in 1870 by Felix Lopez, Herradura is one of the oldest producers of Tequila. The Double Barrel Reposado is aged for 11 months in oak barrels then aged another month in a toasted oak barrel. Herradura invented Resposado Tequila in 1974 and was home to the first female master distiller in the Tequila industry, Teressa Lara Lopez where she worked for 30 years.
Tequila Review: Herradura Double Barrel Resposado
ABV: 40% (80 Proof)
Age: 12 Months
Aging Process: American White Oak Barrel (11 Months)
Secondary Aging: Virgin Toasted Oak Barrel (1 Month)
Distillery: Casa Herradura (Amatitan, Mexico)
The Nose: Warm citrus drifts upward from the glass where it is joined by notes of honey and vanilla on our initial pull of the aromas. Secondary sniffs reveal faint elements of caramel and oak.
The Taste: Oak coats the palate with a wonderful sweetness on the finish of caramel and vanilla. Secondary sips reveal hints of blackberries and bing cherries. The oak lines on the finish with an abundance of banana notes.
The Pairing: You would think a cigar guy could find a cigar in his humidor with a Mexican San Andres wrapper, but I couldn’t. So I opted to pair this with a 7-20-4 cigar that has Mexican tobacco in the filler. With Cinco de Mayo being amateur night, I opted to enjoy this pairing on my deck. Often overlooked the holiday that celebrates Mexico’s defeat of France in the battle of Puebla in 1862.
The cigar which has a nice woodsy profile on its own brings out more of the sweetness in the Tequila. Notes of melon, honey, vanilla, banana and caramel are intensified. While our pairing never affects our final score this pairing gives an additional two points to the Herradura Double Barrel.
The Finish: The Tequila market has changed over the years and has grown in popularity seeing a growth of 142% in 10 years in the United States. Tequila sometimes gets a bad reputation, but there are plenty of outstanding sipping Tequila options available. The Herradura is one of those with a wonderfully complex flavor profile.
