The Oban distillery was founded in 1794 and one of the few urban Scotch distilleries still in operation. Located in the city of Oban on the West coast of Scotland it was privately owned until 1898 where it began changing hands to various companies including Dewers. In 1989, Oban would be acquired by Diageo who still owns it today.
Oban produces about 670,000 liters per year through a single 12,600 liter wash still and a single 7,200 liter spirit still. This makes it the second smallest Scotch distillery owned by Diageo.

The Nose: The first pull of aroma from the glass reveals anise, licorice and sassafras giving the Oban Distillery Edition a root beer like aroma. Subsequent pulls from the glass also reveal honey and green apples.
The Taste: A rich smokey peat reveals itself on the palate during the first sip. The finish however reveals salted caramel and oak. After we let the glass sit for a bit a secondary sip offers up sassafras, cinnamon and a subtle anise revealing itself on the finish. As we finish the pour I am completely enamored by the sassafras.
Conclusion: When I first began drinking fine adult beverages my business parter in NYC introduced me to Oban where it quickly became my go to drink when out and about. Over the years I’ve transitioned away from Scotch but Oban has always had a special place reserved on my bar. At a recent BBQ a friend brought this bottle of The Distillers Edition with him and it sparked my taste buds in a way that I haven’t felt for over a decade. From its aroma to its taste profile this one hits just right.
