Cigar Review: Powstanie San Andres Robusto

Powstanie San Andres was released at the end of January, 2025 as a regular production addition to their cigar portfolio.

At the time the press release states, The San Andreas Powstanie brings together the finest tobaccos to create a cigar that balances strength with nuanced complexity. From the rich, earthy notes of the San Andrés wrapper to the smooth burn and bold finish, this line is destined to be a favorite among seasoned smokers.

Mike Szczepankiewcz, Brand Owner of Powstanie Cigars stated at the time, “This release reflects our commitment to delivering premium cigars with unparalleled quality and flavor. The San Andreas Powstanie is the perfect addition for those who seek strength, depth, and sophistication in their smoking experience.”

In our Top 5 of 2024 the Powstanie Connecticut Justice came in at #3 so how does the San Andres compare?

The Cigar: Dark. Between the chcocolate colored wrapper, black and red band the cigar looks dark. Personally I think darker cigars should have lighter bands, and lighter cigars should have dark bands. The contrast on the shelf would stand out better which is a problem I have with the appearance of the Powstanie San Andres. Outside of the artistic comments the wrapper is flawless with a nice amount of texture and oils to it. In the hand the cigar is firm with no voids of tobacco and a hefty weight for the size.

The Taste: The cold draw serves up notes of leather and a slight anise that appears to grow with each pull of the cold draw. On the foot of the cigar there is an aroma of walnuts and a mix of cedar and pine. Once the cigar is toasted and lit it starts out earthy.

Settling into the first third there are notes of oak and cedar with a touch of earth About an inch into the first third notes of slightly melted chocolate begin to emerge that creates a creamy mouthfeel. That chocolate note carries over to the retrohale where there is some nuttiness and minimal pepper.

Moving into the second third it is as if a switch was hit turning off the chocolate notes as they’ve completely disappeared as the focal on the cigar become oak and walnuts with a subtle but growing coffee component that really shines at the halfway point. As we cross over into the final half notes of cashews begin to emerge with an earthy finish that is intensified on the retrohale with more pepper than the first half.

The last third becomes more earthy while coffee notes slide into the background. The finish of the cigar has a lot of nuttiness that is extremely enjoyable along the lines of cashews. The aroma is spicy with black peppercorns that are intensified on the retrohale which also creates a linger espresso note.

Conclusion: There are some brands that are made at a factory that I like better than the primary brands produced at the factory. For instance I like Tatuaje over My Father and recently I prefer Powstanie over RoMa Craft. In both cases I find the cigars just hit my palate better. It feels like every cigar with the Powstanie name is a homerun so far in my cigar smoking experience and the Powstanie San Andres is no exception. This cigar has the right strength and flavor profile the fits in my wheelhouse. It’s complex, smooth and definitely one of the better San Andres smokes I’ve had.
