Bourbon Review: Lux Row Four Grain Double Single Barrel

The Lux Row Distillers Four Grain Double Single Barrel is a limited edition bourbon whiskey from the Bardstown, Kentucky based distillery.

According to the bottle, “Nearly A DECADE AGO, it started with an idea. A vision to become the leading producer of FINE BOURBONS. In 2018, that DREAM became a reality when LUX ROW DISTILLERS opened its doors. Since then, Lux Rox has mastered the art of CRAFTING fine bourbons, and has made its mark as a prominent stop on the KENTUCKY BOURBON TRAIL. This bottle of 4-grain bourbon commemorates our achievements by combining our WHEATED and RYE bourbon mashbills in perfect HARMONY. Cheers”

A secondary side label denotes, “A perfect & flavorful mix of Lux Row’s finest mashbills. Wheat, rye, corn and malted barley combined together in perfect harmony. A traditional ryed bourbon distilled from the finest ingredients. An unmistakable spicy flavor with hints of caramel and vanilla, an a smooth mellow finish. A defiantly smooth wheated bourbon made from an award-winning recipe dating back to 1849. Notes of caramel and citrus abound, with a velvety oak finish.

The Nose: Sweet and Savory. Aromas of caramel and chocolate malt are easily identifiable in the crisp fall air as I pull from glass on my deck. Secondary pulls from the glass reveal aromas of cherry, oak and toffee. While the aromas are easily identifiable none of them are overpowering and they do not linger.

The Taste: A rich & vibrant cinnamon component takes hold of the palate on the first sip before giving way to rye and a slightly floral component. As those fade the cinnamon returns to the finish with some oak and heat that appears late in the finish. Additional sips showcase the rye barrel with an abundance of rye spice on the front end with finish of vanilla and cinnamon and a nice amount of warmth.

Conclusion: While I am not sure that I agree with Double Single Barrel as it is two barrel which technically makes it a blend this is a great pour. It also has me ANGRY at the bourbon industry which seams to be following the limited edition mentality of the cigar industry. When I went to my local liquor store this was the last bottle on the shelf. And at the time of review there are currently only 85 bottles of this limited edition left in the state of New Hampshire. To put that in perspective there are 79 stores. So the question is can a limited edition of bourbon be in consideration for liquor of the year. If your local liquor store still has these it is a MUST buy.

Score: 98
Price: $79.99 (750ml in New Hampshire)
