Eagle Rare Aged 10 Years is an allocated bourbon that has become hard to get over the years. Although it is becoming more and more visible depending where you shop and what part of the country you live in.
According to the bottle, “Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness – the cornerstones of the birth of a nation, epitomized by the American bald eagle. That nation has come to represent the freedom, spirit and independence of the individual, giving the word products and innovations that are uniquely its own. One such innovation was Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. Early Kentucky settlers created bourbon, the true Americans spirit, in the late 1700s. By practice, and protected by law, no other distilled spirit adheres to the standards as strict as those established for Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey. And few other whiskeys can offer even a glimpse of the great whiskey making found in Eagle Rare. Eagle Rare 10-Year-Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey has a sweet, oaky nose and full, complex body. Reminiscent of a fine port wine, this rare whiskey is best served neat, or over ice. Of course, feel free to drink Eagle Rare in such classic cocktails as the Manhattan or Whiskey Sour.”
Bourbon Review: Eagle Rare Aged 10 Years
ABV: 45% (90 Proof)
Age: 10 Years
Mash Bill: Undisclosed (Buffalo Trace Mashbill #1)
Distillery: Buffalo Trace Distillery
Location: Frankford, KY (USA)
The Nose: A very subtle aroma is barely detectable on the nose consisting of orange peel and oak. After we let the glass sit for a bit there is an even less subtle vanilla and honey.
The Taste: An abundance of general sweetness encapsulates the palate with not a lot of depth. Secondary sips reveal some honey, brown sugar and oak. Working our way through the rest the pour sees it remain the status quo.
The Finish: The short finish is leathery for the moderate duration but before the leather fully takes hold there is oak and honey with a touch of toffee that I wish would linger longer.
Conclusion: I know a few people who drink Eagle Rare exclusively and buy multiple bottles when possible. I am however not one of them. I can see where Eagle Rare is a good entry into bourbon as it is relatively easy to drink. However, if you are a season bourbon drinker you might find this a bit boring and lacking complexity and depth of flavors. Eagle Rare has one of the best looking bottles of bourbons on the market and I’ve thought about getting the eagle logo as a tattoo on my calf because of how amazing it looks. If only the bourbon was as amazing.
