From the Yellow Bird Tennessee Bourbon Whiskey bottle, “Tennessee and the Appalachian Region have a rich history coal mining. These hard working and courageous miners helped establish the state and its modern economy. The smaller, less regarded hero of the times was the Canary who was employed to identify dangerous gas leaks inside the mines, therefore saving countless lives. As a proud Tennessee brand, they honor the history while paying just tribute to our feathered friends whose contributions cannot be overstated.
Yellow Bird Tennessee Bourbon Whiskey is traditional Tennessee Sour Mash Whiskey. A percentage of the proceeds from each bottle sale of Yellow Bird Tennessee Whiskey will be donated to the National Audubon Society.“
Bourbon Review: Yellow Bird Tennessee Bourbon Whiskey
ABV: 45.0% (90 Proof)
Age: 4 Years
Mash Bill: 80% Corn (Locally Grown No 2 Dent Corn), 10% Malted Barley, 10% Rye
Produced & Bottled By: Yellow Bird Brands
Location: Columbia, TN (USA)
The Nose: With an 80% corn mash bill it should come as no surprise that the aroma is corn heavy on the initial pour. It is joined by a powdered sugar as well as a subtle oak. Letting the glass rest for a bit sees an additional aroma of orange citrus and some sunflowers as well.
The Taste: This light colored bourbon continues with a heavy corn taste where it is joined by lilacs and oak of the first sip. There is no doubt that this is not a Kentucky bourbon as the charcoal filtering is evident on the taste. Despite being a purist I found it quite pleasing on the palate albeit a bit thin. Secondary sips see the addition of cloves, baking spices with a subtle black cherry that sings on the finish along with a touch of citrus.
Conclusion: While this bourbon is young with its 4 year age statement it does have a profile that is smoother then some bourbons that are aged longer. I also find the longer you let the poured bourbon sit the more it opens up with additional subtle nuances. It stands out in the price point. If there was one knock it would be the thin mouthfeel, but the flavor makes up for it.
