Matt Booth first developed Room 101 in 2003 as a jewelry brand in Los Angeles. 6 Years later he would connect with Davidoff where Room 101 Cigars would be made by their recently purchased Camacho Cigars. In 2017, he would briefly leave the industry before coming back with two new cigars made with Robert Caldwell. More recently, Scandinavian Tobacco Group (STG) would purchase Room 101 Cigars where Matt Booth remains today as creative director.
The Room 101 Farce Nicaragua is made at Joya de Nicaragua and was one of the first cigars to be shipped by General Cigar (owned by STG) after the purchase of Room 101.
Cigar Review: Room 101 Cigars Farce Nicaragua
Size: Robusto (5 x 50)
Wrapper: Nicaragua
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Debut: November 2022
Box Count: 20
Final Smoking Time: 1 hour 09 minutes.
The Cigar: The Robusto is listed on various websites as either a 5.25″ or 5.5″ but the sku says 5 x 50 so we are going with that. The band is a beautiful baby blue color that stands out on the shelf with a tobacco flower and gold accents. A secondary band denotes F|A|R|C|E.The non disclosed wrapper variety is a fairly dry looking wrapper with and average vein structure. In the hand the cigar is of an average weight and no voids of tobacco.
The Taste: The cold draw of the cigar is sweet with notes honey, cocoa and earth. The aroma from the foot is similar with some wood as well. Once the cigar is cut and lit there is a heavy floral note that begins to wane over a few puffs before notes of hickory, cashews and raisins develop. The retrohale remains slightly floral with a toffee like aroma.
In the second third, the Room 101 Nicaragua become earthy with additional notes of hay. The cigar loses its complexity with only the addition of cedar. The finish is slightly floral and the retrohale sees has a perfume like quality to it.
As our cigar comes to a conclusion the song remains the same. There is a lot of earthiness to it with a subtle cedar and not much else going on. The retrohale remains slightly floral with a bit of a pepper to it.
Conclusion: I remember when Room 101 first came out it was the time of the Chattanooga Tweet Up where a bunch of cigar smokers got together at Burns in Tennessee. Attached to the cigar lounge was a large pool hall with a center bar. It was here that I drank Jaegermeister for the last time. Dylan Austin of Davidoff order 20 Jaeger shots, to which Matt said was weak and made it 30. It wound up being 50 shots with Dylan prevailing.
Aside from being a party animal, Matt Booth is an all around nice guy. His silver jewelry is custom made and a rep for Miami Cigar lost his Room 101 ring and was devastated. Matt Booth caught wind of this and made him a new ring at no charge.
Despite having some fun times with Matt Booth and having high hopes for this cigar coming from the Joya de Nicaragua factory I was left disappointed. It never developed into a memorable experience.
