Cigar Review: Dapper 10th Anniversary

Dapper Cigar Company celebrates with the Dapper 10th Anniversary.

Better late than never. According to the website, Dapper Cigar Company began in 2013 which would make this cigar about 2 years to late. But cigars are deeply rooted in the latin culture. A culture that is never on-time and often wedding invitations have an earlier time than the actual wedding to assure people arrive on time. So with that in mind, this is right on time. Yes, you should be reading that with an inflection of sarcasm.

The cigar is available in one size according to a press release and various retailers that have it measured at 6 x 54. For some reason the company sent a 4.5 x 54 version to media members which is what this review is based on.

The Look: The band is a simple black and gold with the Dapper logo with a secondary band denoting 10th Anniversary. It has a premium look to it and considering the price tag the appearance matches the pricing to my eyes. The Ecuador grown Corojo wrapper has some visible veins and a nice amount of oils. In the hand it’s firm with a densely packed foot and a hefty weight to it.

The Taste: The cap of the cigar is thick so take note when cutting this one. The cold draw serves up notes of dry popcorn without any butter, earth and a subtle coffee. The foot of the cigar offers up some more earth, a touch of pepper (yes, I sneezed) and so cedar. It’s intriguing enough to light up but at the same time I am concerned given my disappointment with Dominican made cigars lately.

Once the cigar is toasted and lit there is an abundance of nuttiness that is a mixture of almonds and pecans to start things offer which is better than I was expecting from the pre-light ritual. As the cigar settles down notes of bread and ground coffee beans join the mix. The retrohale is extremely smooth and sees the addition of melted butter and a touch of fig.

As we enter the second third the Dapper 10th Anniversary needs a touch up as the thick Ecuador Corojo wrapper begin to burn wonky. The flavor profile changes up with earth becoming dominant along with continued ground coffee beans and the addition of brown sugar. The retrohale serves notes of popcorn, buttery richness and a subtle mocha.

The final third sees notes of earth become dominant with a subtle wheat bread component. There is continued coffee and a touch of leather with cedar on the finish. The thick wrapper gives me a it of a burn issue as the cigar requires its second touch up. Those that know me know I often choose not to touch up my cigars are they usually self correct. That wasn’t this issue with the 3 samples I’ve smoked. The retrohale still sees notes of popcorn and for the first time a lingering black pepper.

Conclusion: First off I am thank for the samples of the Dapper 10th Anniversary but I have to ask why a company would send a sample that wasn’t the release version of the cigar. What good does a review do that company since what I am smoking can’t be bought. Sure you can buy it as a 6 x 54, but there will be subtle differences. Just seems like a poor marketing decision.

On our cigar podcast The Cigar Court which can be found on YouTube, Spotify, Apple, etc we should do a show on regional cigars. Granted I left Miami in 2013 right around when this brand was born in California but until the company sent me samples I was completely unaware of any brands the company makes and was shocked to see they have been in existence for 10 years.

It’s not a bad cigar especially if you like Dominican made cigars and there is enough going on that it kept me engaged. The price on the other hand seems a bit high especially since the cigar only has 1 year post roll aging and the wrapper seems a bit young.

Score: 88
Price: $22.00 (Before any local or state taxes)
