The Jaime Garcia Reserve Especial Sucesor was released with very little fanfare with the company opting to announce it via a Facebook posting. The 2024 Limited Edition is available in two sizes with two different wrappers. There is a a Toro (6 x 56) which features a Sumatra-seed wrapper that I can’t wait for the cigar industry to get away from and a Torpedo (6 1/8 x 52) using a Habano seed wrapper. Bot cigars are box pressed.
The original Jaime Garcia was released in 2009 and is named after the son of My Father Cigars owner, Jose “Pepin” Garcia. That cigar is in continuous production and is a staple in the My Father portfolio of cigars.
My Father Cigars has not disclosed how many of each size is being made.

The Cigar: Even though the cigar is box pressed it feels larger then a 52 ring gauge torpedo.. The cigar features the colorful Jaime Garcia Edicion Especial band with a secondary band denoting Sucesor. The Habano wrapper has some subtle veins and tooth and a nice amount of oils. In the hand the cigar is firm with no voids of tobacco with an above average weight.
The Taste: Once the cigar is prepped for smoking the cold draw reveals a subtle raisin and vanilla while the aroma off the foot of the cigar has a hint of cedar. After we toast and light the cigar it starts with the classic Pepin spice that for me has always been the signature note of just about every cigar to come out of the My Father Cigars factory.
Smoking the first third sees the pepper notes pull back relatively quickly as they usually do to reveals notes of split top bread and cedar with a subtle vanilla in the background. The retrohale sees some nutmeg and brown sugar emerge that also make their way to the palate. As the first third comes to a close some hints of leather begin to emerge.
The second third of the Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial Sucesor torpedo see the cigar develop notes of cacao and red pepper creating an enjoyable complexity. There are notes of leather, cedar and peanuts with a slightly salty finish. The retrohale of the cigar white pepper and cedar with the return of vanilla from the first third.
The final third sees some cacao remain with some red pepper and peanuts. After we remove the band leather becomes the focal point of the cigar drowning out the other flavors on the palate. The retrohale sees an abundance of white pepper with some nuttiness on the finish before being wiped out once again by the leather on the palate.
Conclusion: In 2009 the Jaime Garcia Reserva Especial helped bring the son of Jose Garcia into the limelight of the My Father family. The cigar which still exists today is a staple in the My Father catalog but it seems to have lost some of the luster being around so long. When I noticed the Sucesor on the shelves this summer I eagerly reached for both sizes but I gravitated to the torpedo despite it being a size I hate. Whether you are a fan of the old brand or not this is a cigar definitely worth a box purchase.
